A grazing trace

Trace fossils are the less glamorous geological finds, but can still reveal something about the distant past:

Us gastropods eat algae,
We graze ’em off the rocks
And leave the surface looking
Like a nasty case of pox.

Our ancestors did likewise,
Leaving tracks and trails behind ’em –
They’re what geologists will call
Trace fossils, if they find ’em.
